The best way into a city is usually the loudest one.
What a tuk tuk costs in Lisbon against what it costs in Jaipur. Which Bangkok night run actually stops for food. Whether the electric ones make it up the Alfama steps. Reviews of every tuk tuk, rickshaw and cyclo you can book.
Four rides that explain what a tuk tuk is for.
A Lisbon hill climb, a Bangkok night run, a driver who waits at Angkor and a rickshaw through Asakusa. What each costs, and what the people in the back seat say.
01The hill climbTrue 4Hour Private Tuk Tuk Tour: Discover Lisbon with a Local!Alfama is too steep and too narrow for a coach. Four hours, one driver, and the viewpoints taken in the right order.
02The night runBangkok by Night: Temples, Markets and Food Tuk-Tuk TourBangkok after six: a temple, a market, then a plastic stool with a plate on it. The ride between them is half the point.
03The waiting gameAngkor Wat Private Tuk-Tuk TourYour driver parks and waits while you walk Angkor. Book the whole day; the temples sit further apart than the map admits.
04Pulled, not drivenTokyo Asakusa Rickshaw TourAsakusa at a running pace, behind someone who knows which backstreets stay quiet. Thirty minutes is plenty. An hour is better.
Lisbon, Bangkok, Colombo, Siem Reap, Jaipur, Madrid.
Six cities where the tuk tuk is not a novelty but the sensible way across town: steep lanes, hot afternoons, traffic a car cannot thread. The best ride in each.
In Portugal a tuk tuk is really a hill-climbing machine.
Lisbon was built on seven hills and then paved in polished limestone. Four kinds of Portuguese ride, what it costs to board each one, and which town it belongs to.

A private tuk tuk bends its route. A tour bus does not.
One vehicle, your people in it, and a driver who will wait outside the pastry shop. Most private rides are quoted for the whole tuk tuk, so three travellers pay what one would.

A tuk tuk at night is a different vehicle.
The heat drops, the market stalls come out and the temples switch their floodlights on. Bangkok, Colombo, Siem Reap and Chiang Mai all keep their best tuk tuk hours for after six.
What a tuk tuk actually costs, and where.
Every ride on the site sorted by price. In Sri Lanka and Rajasthan a whole day behind a driver costs less than an hour of the same thing in Iberia.
A city loop in Colombo, Kandy or Jaipur, often a full day with the driver waiting between stops.
Three rides no coach and no taxi can do.
A tuk tuk fits where a bus cannot, stops where a taxi will not, and costs less than either. Here is where that difference actually decides the day.

Alfama, which was never widened
Alfama was laid out before anyone owned a car and nobody has rearranged it since. The lanes run about two metres across, the gradient touches one in five, and the tram queue at Martim Moniz can swallow an hour before you move. A tuk tuk takes the same lanes at walking pace with the roof off, stops at the viewpoints that have no parking, and gets back down the far side without reversing.

The temple run after the heat goes
Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the river cross between them are a punishing walk at two in the afternoon and a pleasure at seven. Bangkok drivers know which gates stay open late and which pier the ferry actually leaves from. The trip is short, the traffic is the show, and the engine noise at a standstill is the thing everyone remembers.

The ones with no engine at all
A jinrikisha in Asakusa is pulled at a jog by someone who has memorised the quiet lanes; a cycle rickshaw in Old Delhi threads Chandni Chowk at the speed of the crowd. Neither can be hurried and neither needs to be. You sit high, the driver talks backwards over one shoulder, and the street happens at arm’s length.

Four tuk tuk rides that genuinely sell out.
Most tuk tuks can be arranged from a hotel desk an hour beforehand. These four cannot: one driver, one vehicle, one departure, and a queue of people who booked in March.
- 01Angkor Wat Private Tuk-Tuk TourOne driver per party and a start in the dark. Siem Reap runs out of tuk tuks well before it runs out of visitors.
- 02Bangkok Midnight Food Tuk Tuk TourThe Bangkok late-night food runs go out with a fixed route and a handful of seats. Same-day almost never works.
- 03Tajmahal Full day Tour by tuk tukAgra opens its gates before sunrise, and the drivers who do that run are spoken for the night before.
- 04Jaipur Tuk-Tuk Tour with Flower Market VisitThe Jaipur flower market is finished by nine. Drivers who include it start before six and take one party a morning.
Open sides, three seats, and a price quoted for the vehicle.
A tuk tuk has no doors, usually no belts and almost never a roof you can close. Most seat two or three adults, and a good share are priced per machine rather than per head, so a couple pays what one rider would. Monsoon means a plastic curtain rather than a cancellation. Hills are where the electric ones earn their premium.
